Locks and homes in Los Feliz
Los Feliz runs from the flats along Hillhurst Avenue and Vermont Avenue up into the hills under Griffith Park, the Greek Theatre and the Observatory. Down low it is dense: 1920s courtyard buildings, garden apartments and newer complexes. Up the hill are large houses, some of them well-known architecture, with steep drives and staircases to the door.
Two very different jobs share the neighborhood. In the apartment buildings it is unit doors, lobby doors, intercom-controlled entries, mailbox locks and the parking gate, usually for a manager who needs a tenant turnover done quickly and a set of keys that makes sense. On the hillside it is a single household with many entrances: a front door at the top of the stairs, a lower door into the garage, terrace doors, and often an older handleset that the owners want kept but working smoothly. In both cases, knowing who has which key is most of the problem.
