Locks and homes in Van Nuys

Van Nuys mixes older single-family homes, dense apartment blocks and a busy commercial strip, so we swing between rekeying a house after a move, opening a car locked in a lot, and changing locks on a small business. We cut and program car keys on site and rekey every door to one key.

Van Nuys is the highest-turnover work we do. Between the apartment blocks off Sherman Way and Victory, the duplexes on the side streets and the industrial units along Saticoy, doors here change hands constantly, and the lock almost never changes with them. We are called out to units where the same builder cylinder has served a dozen tenants and nobody can say how many keys are out there. On the commercial side it is aluminum storefronts and roll-ups, where the cylinder is exposed to the street and the hasp is usually the weak point rather than the lock.

How fast

Getting to Van Nuys

Fifteen and a half miles over the pass, so 25 to 40 minutes, and the 5 and the 405 through the Newhall Pass decide which. Mornings southbound and evenings northbound are the slow directions. For an apartment building, having the manager meet us saves more time than anything on the road does.

Questions

Van Nuys locksmith questions

Do you open cars locked in a parking lot?

We do. Van Nuys car lockouts are quick for us; we open the door without damage and can cut a spare if the keys are locked inside or lost.

A tenant moved out. Rekey or replace?

Rekey, almost always. The lock itself is usually fine; what has expired is the list of people holding a key. Rekeying takes minutes per door, costs a fraction of new hardware, and can be done for several units in one visit. Replace only when the cylinder is worn to the point of sticking or the hardware has been forced.

Can you do a whole building rather than one unit at a time?

Yes, and it is much cheaper per door. We can key every unit differently, give the manager one master that opens all of them, do the mailboxes and the laundry room in the same run, and leave you a written key record so the next turnover is a phone call.

Need a locksmith in Van Nuys?

Text a photo of the lock and your ZIP code, day or night, and you get the price and an arrival time before we drive over.
