Locks and homes in Northridge

Northridge mixes student apartments near CSUN with suburban family homes, so we do a lot of rekeys at move-in and turnover, apartment lockouts, and fresh deadbolts. We cut and program car keys on site and open locked doors without drilling wherever the lock allows.

Two things shape lock work in Northridge. One is the university: a large share of the housing near CSUN is rented to students, turns over every summer, and has been rekeyed so many times that the cylinders are worn smooth. The other is 1994. A lot of doors and frames around here were re-hung or repaired after the earthquake, and a rehung door with the old strike screwed back into a patched jamb is a door whose deadbolt is holding onto very little. It looks fine and it locks, and it comes apart with one shove.

Thirteen and a half miles, so 25 to 40 minutes with the 118 and Reseda Boulevard setting the pace. Student rentals turning over in August are the one time of year we book this area ahead, so if you manage one, call earlier than you think you need to.

Questions

Northridge locksmith questions

Do you rekey student rentals near CSUN?

Yes. Turnover rekeys around CSUN are common for us; we set every exterior lock to one new key so old keys stop working.

Can you make a car key on campus or nearby?

We can. We cut and program car keys wherever the car is parked, on the street or in a lot, so there is no tow to a dealer.

The frame was repaired years ago and the door locks fine. Is that enough?

Locking and holding are different things. Check what the strike is screwed into: if it is patched jamb rather than the stud behind it, the deadbolt is anchored in filler. We fit a reinforced strike with three-inch screws into the framing, which is a short job and is what actually decides whether the door holds.

I rent to students and rekey every year. Is that overkill?

It is exactly right, and the more useful question is whether the cylinder can take another one. After enough rekeys the pins and the plug wear and the lock gets sloppy. When we see that we will tell you it is time to replace rather than take your money to rekey it again.
