Car key programming

Car Key and Fob Programming

A car key is two things: a blade that turns the lock and a chip that tells the immobilizer the key belongs to this car. Programming is the second part. It is why a copy cut at a hardware store opens the door and will not start the engine, and it is what we do on site with the car, not at a dealer.

What we do

Programming we do

  • Adding a spare key to a car that has one
  • Programming after all keys are lost
  • Fobs and remotes bought online
  • Push-to-start smart keys
  • Keys that turn but will not start the car
  • Deleting lost or stolen keys from the car
  • Remote buttons that stopped locking the doors
  • Immobilizer resets after a battery change
How it works

Before you buy a fob online

Cheap fobs from online marketplaces sometimes work and often do not. A fob has to match the car's frequency and chip type, and a used one pulled from another car is frequently locked to that car forever and cannot be taught a new one. Send us the listing or a photo of the fob's back with its FCC ID before you buy, and we will tell you whether it will program. When all keys are lost, some makes run a security wait of ten minutes or more before the car accepts a new key; that is the car protecting itself, not us being slow.

Where we come to you

Where we program keys

Wherever the car is parked across the Santa Clarita Valley, the San Fernando Valley, Lancaster, Palmdale and out to Ventura County: driveways, work parking lots and shop lots. On the Westside we work by appointment and do not take car key calls.

Questions

Programming questions

My new key opens the door but the car will not start. Why?

The blade is right and the chip is not programmed, or there is no chip at all. We program it to the immobilizer on site, or supply a key with the right chip if yours has none.

Can you program a fob I bought myself?

Often, if it is the right frequency and chip for the car and has not been locked to another vehicle. Send the listing or the FCC ID before you buy, and we tell you first.

Do I need every key with me?

It helps. On many cars, programming a new key erases the ones not present, so bring every key you want to keep working.

Can you delete a key someone else has?

Yes. While we are connected we can remove a lost or stolen key from the car's memory so it no longer starts the engine.

Key cut but the car will not start?

Text the year, make and model and what the key does or does not do, and we will send a price.
